William Petty Fitzmaurice, 1st Marquess of Landsdowne (1737-1805) - known for a period as the Earl of Shelburne - was an Anglo-Irish Whig statesman who also served as the First Home Secretary (1782) and later, as Prime Minister (1782-83) during the final stages of the American War of Independence. His biography, which spans from 1776-1805, explores his role in the American Revolution, the contributions he made to the British government, and his efforts to establish peace with America. 3 vols, octavo (221 x 140 mm). Half vellum, gilt-tooled spines with red morocco labels and titles in gilt, red cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Previous bookplate of British politician John Wynford Philipps, 1st Viscount St Davids (1860-1938) to front pastedowns. Some soiling to boards and spine, with a ring to rear board of volume one, some foxing throughout, occasional pencilled markings to margins (that do not obscure text). A very good set.
