A propos de cet article

1801. New edition, corrected - 4 volumes. vii, 298pp. and a frontispiece portrait of Samuel Johnson; v, 287pp.; iii, 284pp.; iii, 322pp. plus a 2 page catalogue. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) is among England's best known literary figures. Dr Johnson was an essayist, poet, biographer, lexicographer and a critic of English Literature. Also considered to be a great wit and prose stylist, he was well known for his aphorisms. He is particularly remembered for his Dictionary of the English Language. The Lives of the English Poets was his last major project. The first authorised separate edition was published in 1781 and was subjected to criticism, partly due to names included and names omitted. He covers both the work and lives of the major post-Restoration English poets beginning with Abraham Cowley and ending with George Lyttelton. The four volumes are uniformly bound in full 'tree' leather boards with simple gold decoration on the spines. The title labels are missing. The cases of the books reflect their age with scuffing and some staining to the leather on the boards. There are also patches where a top layer of the leather has lifted, most noticeably on the front board of volume 3 and the bottom edge of the front board and the rear board of volume 4. The corners are bumped with a little damage and loss to the leather. About 1/4" to 3/4" of the leather is missing from the spine ends and the title labels are missing. The leather is split down the front spine edge of all four volumes and rear spine edge of volume 1. The other volumes have a split in the leather down most of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean although there is damp browning to the pages throughout all four volumes. The endpapers are stained around the edges where colour has been taken from the leather binding of the books and there is a water stain around the edges of the frontisipeice in the first volume. There is a name stamp on the top of the half-title page in volumes 1 and 2 and the title page of volumes 3 and 4. There is no inscription.…
