First edition of this translation. Pp. [32], 1-416; 1-394; [18]. Lacks portrait frontis. Contemporary calf, with raised bands to spine, also of red label and gilt lettering and compartment decoration, now rubbed and dulled; marbled edges. Wear to extremities, with loss and damage around head of spine and top of front joint. Small chip to calf at lower board. The top of the title page has been clipped and ink notes exist on page one of the text, reading 'Dungannon' and at the endleaf, reading 'Remember what I say - Dungannon' and '1690', all in the same contemporary hand. Otherwise quite clean internally with minimal spotting. The synopsis of Stefan Bauer's 2007 work, The Censorship and Fortuna of Platina's 'Lives of the Popes' in ths Sixteenth Century, highlights how Platina's work was the first papal history composed as a humanist Latin narrative. Bauer also explains how after the editio princeps of 1479, updated and extended editions continued to be produced until late in the 18th century. Summarising the work's popularity, Bauer notes that it was read eagerly by Catholics and appreciated by Protestants for its more critical study of the papacy. Wing P2403 Folio.
