A beautiful complete set of The Lives of the Queens of England by Agnes Strickland from a private collection in good plus condition. The set is uniformly half bound in green polished calf over marbled paper boards, with five raised bands, intricately tooled in gilt, on the spines. All edges and endpapers marbled. Very light wear on the covers with the exception of Vol I and XII. On these books there are tiny tears on the front joints near the head. There is a water mark on front cover at the foot of the spine. The front hinges are sprung in all volumes with the exception of Vol. XI. Pages 343-346 in Vol.XI are loose, but there are no missing pages. A small light semi-circular stain, perhaps a tea spill, can be seen at the bottom gutters of preliminary pages in Vol.s I, and IV-VII. Brief notation in pencil by previous seller on verso of the front free endpaper and faint inscription in period script on the top margin of the full title page in Vol.I only. Light foxing/age-toning here and there on the preliminaries, and the text and illustrations are generally clean, smooth and unmarked with no tears or signs of damp. Each volume has a frontis-piece, illustrated title page and a vignette. Vol.X includes an additional 2 plates. 7.5" X 5". xxiv, 360; 384; viii, 380; ix-xvi, 447; 450; 503; 485; 478; xiii, 429; 416; 440, viii; xvi, 462pp. The set details the childhoods, marriages, reigns, and deaths of each queen: including-Matilda of Flanders the Queen of William the Conqueror, Isabella of France the Queen of Edward II, Anne Boleyn second Queen of Henry VIII, Mary I the first Queen-Regent of England and Ireland, Elizabeth I the Second Queen-Regent of England and Ireland, Henrietta Maria Consort of Charles I, and Mary II Queen-Regent of Great Britain and Ireland and others.
