Item description from seller

Modern boards with spine titled in black. 4to, engraved title-page + pp[iv] + 48 uncut, title-page lightly damp marked, half-title with neat period initial in top corner and small marginal ink blot, else text attractively crisp and unpressed, an excellent copy. ** Scarce 3rd Edition : see COPAC listing only the Birmingham copy : and see the National Union Catalogue also listing only a single copy of this 3rd Edition. The 1st & 2nd Editions were both also published 1796 - and both also are extremely uncommon. *** The engraved title-page vignette shows Plas Newydd with the ruins of Castel Dinas Bran and the Eglwyseg Rocks in the background. *** Comprises a prefatory Sonnet by H. F. Cary, one of the earliest works by the famous Dante translator : together with Seward's 11pp poem 'Llangollen Vale, inscribed to the Right Honorable Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Ponsonby'. Several of the remaining poems take the landscape as theme eg. On Wrexham and the Inhabitants of its Environs : Hoyle Lake : Eyam [in the Derbyshire Peak district]. *** Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby were Europe's most famous lesbian couple avant la lettre. They lived in Plas Newydd at Llangollen from c.1770-1830, dressed in semi-masculine gear, and were dubbed the 'most celebrated virgins in Europe'. 'All tourists in Wales sought introduction to them, and many made the journey to Llangollen for the special purpose of visiting them' [DNB] including De Quincey and various European nobility. *** Their presence in Llangollen, allied to the painter J.M.W. Turner's description of it as 'a complete romantic landscape', together with the publication of this, Anna Seward's most famous poem, served to cement the importance of Llangollen in the romantic literary imagination. **** To order this book, please click the link Ask Bookseller A Question.
