Description:
A landmark work by British author Radclyffe Hall, The Well of Loneliness remains one of the most controversial and significant novels in modern literary history. Set in post-World War I England, it tells the story of Stephen Gordon, a woman born "different,"struggling for acceptance and love in a world hostile to her identity.
Banned upon its release by Jonathan Cape in 1928 for alleged obscenity, the novel was soon reissued in Paris by The Pegasus Press, becoming a symbol of artistic and personal freedom beyond Britain's borders. With a thoughtful commentary by sexologist Havelock Ellis, the book was recognized for its psychological depth and social insight - qualities that have kept it in print for nearly a century.
