A propos de cet article

The second New Haven edition. An Elizabethtown, New Jersey edition was also published the same year (Felcone 556). 16mo: 129, [1, blank], 40, 32, 8, 6 p. Untrimmed leaves with some light foxing. In a modern one-quarter leather over blue paper binding, with blind-stamped titles. This small volume played a critical role in generating public interest in supporting a mission to the Hawaiian Islands by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) in 1820, an undertaking that transformed the history of what was then the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Obookiah, or more accurately Opukaha'ia, was born on the island of Hawai'I and arrived in New Haven aboard an American ship in 1809. His expressed interest in an education and his friendship with Reverend Edwin Dwight sparked the creation of the Foreign Mission School in Cornwall, a special school for "heathen" youth who, it was hoped, would return to their respective countries and gather others into the redemptive fold of universal Christianity and "civilization". Although the school failed by 1828, the ABCFM's mission to Hawai'I became one of its outstanding success stories. Opukaha'ia's memoirs became, in the words of historian Ralph S. Kuykendall, "a classic in the history of modern Christian missions" and a staple of antebellum evangelical literature. Nearly a dozen editions were published in the five decades following his death, including those of the American Sunday School Union and the American Tract Society, as well as editions in Hawaiian, Choctaw, and Greek. As John Demos observed in The Heathen School: A Story of Hope and Betrayal in the Age of the Early Republic (2014), "Across a large swath of nineteenth-century America, few names were more well and widely known than Henry Obookiah." In 1993, Opukaha'ia's remains were disinterred from the Cornwall cemetery and repatriated to Hawai'i.…
