Two volumes, 12mo, pp. [x], 155, [3], [6] table, [4] advertisements; [vi], 99, [1]; [ii], iv, 101; with a frontispiece in each volume (Pope in vol I, Swift in vol II), and an engraved illustration at the front of Laus Ululae; somewhat browned in vol II, else a most attractive copy in contemporary calf, spines with red and green morocco labels, joints very slightly cracked at head, else excellent. A fine copy of an important miscellany, very rare complete and in such fine state. This is a publication by Edmund Curll, and despite the date in the imprint, both volumes were actually published in July 1726. They were not intended to be helpful to Pope or, indeed, any of the other named authors. As Baines and Rogers relate: 'The set began with the most explosive item: Volume I contains the letters which Pope had written in his youth to Cromwell, deeply embarrassing to the author, as well as a number of his earlier poems, now published for the first time but none of great significance. Through his informant Elizabeth Thomas, Curll was able to get hold of some new Dryden materials'. The second volume includes several pieces alleged to be by Swift, some of them not actually his work: the present copy has the first issue of this volume, with Laus Ululae. The books' publication marks a significant point in the escalation of Pope's quarrel with Curll, leading to courtroom battles but also to publications clearly inspired by, or in response, to them: the following summer, the Pope-Swift Miscellanies began to appear, as authorised versions of their own work, and also of pieces by other Scriblerians. Ancaster her book 1726': this must be Jane, Duchess of Ancaster. She was born Jane Brownlow, of the Lincolnshire family, and married the future 2nd Duke in 1711, becoming Duchess on her father-in-law's death in 1723. She died in 1736. In modern times the books belonged to the poet John Drinkwater (1882-1937) and Oliver Brett, Viscount Esher (1881-1963).
