Item description from seller

217 pages : illustrations, maps ; 21 cm. The aim of this work is to ascertain whether there is any substance in the assumption that there exist typical male and female grave gifts so distinctive that a sex-determination can be firmly based upon them in cases when an osteological examination has not been made. The investigation is performed on some 600 burials from the Athenian Iron Age, listed in a concise catalogue. The grave offerings are discussed and analysed according to their function as indicators of sex. Through a methodological study and with the help of an exclusion principle it is demonstrated that some sex-indicating items from all the three main periods in the Iron Age of Athens do exist. Also the number and certain combinations of objects turn out to indicate male or female sex. Thus, thanks to the method, a number of individuals, previously with their sex unknown to us, are identified as males and females respectively on the basis of the types of their grave gifts. Considering this, one is tempted to say that it might reflect a deliberate intention in the Athenian Iron Age society to make distinctions between men and women by the choice of grave offerings. However, such distinctions might not have been what was primarily emphasized. A number of burials are extremely well furnished, which is commonly interpreted as a sign of wealth and social power. It is also obvious that, in general, female burials are much more richly equipped than are those of men. This brings up the question: what was the main thing that influenced the amount and choice of grave offerings - sex or social position? On the basis of the results of the analysis of the grave gifts, it is here finally argued that there was a lack of signs of "personal resourcefulness", among both men and women. For example, female activities are not explicitly represented in the form of grave gifts that evidence women's own resourcefulness in working life and other duties. An exposition of grave offerings as prestige goods indicates that both the individual and the sex of the individual were secondary to the the aim of expressing wealth and power among certain families.
