A propos de cet article

Square octavo, black boards (hardcover), xiv + 192 pp. Near-Fine, with light foxing (age darkened spotting) to page edges; in a Near-Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: There are today perhaps fewer than 1,500 manatees left in the United States, and each year natural mortality and human activity take their toll. Other populations of Sirenia -- in the Caribbean, West Africa, the Amazon and the Indo-Pacific -- are also highly endangered. This handsome and informative volume is the first to document the natural history and the need for conservation of these popular and harmless creatures. Written by two leading marine scientists, Manatees and Dugongs begins with the evolutionary history of the manatee and dugong species and their relationships with man, who continues to hunt them even today. The book then discusses each of the three manatee species, found in Florida, the Antilles, the Amazon Basin, and along the coast of West Africa, and the dugong, which is found in the waters of many Indo-Pacific countries. For each species, information is provided about its anatomy, behavior, range and current status. The book includes, too, an account of the tragic history of the Steller's sea cow -- killed off just 27 years after its discovery by Russian fur traders in the late 19th century -- and methods of conservation, including the preservation of precious habitats. Throughout, Manatees and Dugongs is illustrated with beautiful full-color photographs and line drawings. Natural History, Manatees, Dugongs, Florida, Floridiana, Marine Mammals. yslic.…
