A propos de cet article

A two-volume report produced by an Italian student of silk weaving from the lectures and handouts from his Professor including samples of the fabrics produced in his practical work. The names of the weaving school, the Professor and the student author are not given. Undated, but estimated around 1900. Superb error-free cursive handwriting throughout. Many weave diagrams and tipped in samples of cloth, all present as required. Volume 1: Stoffe Unite. Non-jacquard fabrics only: plain and fancy cloths white and dyed, and colour-wovens. 112pp, 42 weave diagrams and 46 samples of fabrics made from these. Volume 2: Stoffe Operate. Jacquard fabrics only. 195pp. 43 diagrams showing jacquard loom arrangements, 58 weave diagrams and 23 samples of fabrics made from these. In 747 A.D. sericulture was brought to Sicily by captured Greeks quickly giving rise to a local silk production and a weaving industry. This spread through Italy during the 12th and 13th centuries and for about 300 years Italy controlled the European silk industry. Lucca, Venice, Pisa, Florence and Milan were the main silk centres; Como developed later. All these places needed to train their weavers and the usual practice was for young apprentices, while working in the industry, to attend a weaving school by day release and evening classes. It is likely, but not certain, that this student was trained in Como. Original quarter leather binding with decorative boards. Title, volume number and horizontal bands embossed on spines. Slight wear to all edges of the covers. All pages slightly browned. Strike-over to facing page of darker fabric samples. Otherwise the volumes and contents are Very Good.…
