Map. Lithograph. Image measures 12" x 6.5". This is a unique map showing the last residences of Thomas Paine in New York City. Thomas Paine was an English-born American Founding Father, French Revolutionary, political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. Essentially three maps on one sheet, it features the location of the house between Christopher Street and Jones Street in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, where he boarded until May 1809. As his health declined, it became necessary to move him out of the boarding house to another house not far from the first. He died in the back room of this house on June 8, 1809. The three maps show the streets of the city near the location in 1809, 1827, and 1864. Each map notes the location of the three houses, a few neighboring buildings, and details of ownership in each year, providing a curious snapshot of one of the many evolutions of the city. While 1809 depicts Christopher Street and Jones Street with no parallel streets running between them, by 1827 Burrows Street and Raisin Street appear between Christopher and Jones. By 1864, Burrows Street is renamed Grove Street, and Raisin Street is called Barrow Street. Herring Street, noted in 1809 and 1827, becomes Bleecker Street by 1864. Fourth Street also appears by 1864. While the street names remain the same as in 1864, 7th Avenue now runs diagonally between Barrow and Christopher Street. Greenwich Village was, at the time, much like a village and was sparsely settled. A few years after Paine's death, the house was demolished in 1830. Today, all that remains to identify the site as Paine's residence is a plaque honoring Paine on the building occupying the site. The map is in good condition with minimal wear along fold intersections. The map appeared in the 1864 edition of The Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York by D.T. Valentine, Clerk of the Common Council, an annual compendium of records about city history, city council information, and public works through text, maps, lithographs, and engravings. The "Manuals of the Corporation" were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York first compiled by D.T. Valentine. These books include detailed information on the meetings of the Aldermen Council, ordinances passed, public officials, the city's debts, directories of hospitals, alms houses and schools, ferry schedules, lists of public porters, demographics and census information, and descriptions of historic buildings and streets. Much of the information was gleaned from Dutch and English sources, as processed by Valentine. D.T. Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years and took it upon himself to compile the "Manuals", which he updated and published annually from 1841-1866. Joseph Shannon succeeded Valentine as Clerk and published the manuals for 1868 and 1869. The final edition of the manual was published by John Hardy. It is an excellent source of early New York City history.
