Item description from seller

136pp, half title with advertisement for 'Books of Navigation, Sea Charts, &c. on the recto, woodcut diagrams including a near full-page depiction of the Mariner's Compass. Pages 57-64 printed on light blue paper. With a titlepage on p.89 reading 'A large and useful table of difference of latitude and departure.' 4to. Contemporary mottled sheep, rear board very worn, large areas of the leather missing but both boards securely attached, wear to rear joint, foot of spine & corners. Internally generally a clean copy, without front e.p., lower corner of half title clipped without loss of text, two revenue stamps at foot. This edition not on ESTC or Worldcat. First published in 1676, and re-issued throughout the eighteenth century with the calendar data recalculated for each edition. Here it is 'made to serve (without any considerable error) till the year 1790', from 1775. It would almost certainly have been used by Anglo-American sailors, as it records latitude and longitude for 'the coast of America in the South Sea, from California to Cape Horn', as well as the coast of the West Indies. Designed to be used on board ship, it was ephemeral, and by 1730 new editions appeared almost annually.
