The building practices dominating contemporary architecture are rooted in the exploitation of people and the degradation of our landscapes. Here, Paloma Gormley, Summer Islam, and George Massoud explore how this has come about and how alternative systems, with holistic approaches to the built environment, might be formulated. Material Cultures is a not-for-profit organisation founded by Paloma Gormley, Summer Islam, and George Massoud, which investigates and advocates for the use of bio-based materials in the built environment, reimagining an alternative ecology of systems for a post-carbon future. They work on the designs of prototypical low carbon buildings and in-depth research into the opportunities and consequences of a decarbonized built environment.
