A propos de cet article

• Inscribed school prize book from St Bede's School, Eastbourne — awarded to E. M. Bayfield for Latin, Division I, July 1901. Full calf binding with school arms (AUT DISCERE AUT DOCERE) blocked in gilt on the front cover; prize plate on the front paste-down preserves the school's formal presentation.George Griffith's Men Who Have Made the Empire in a substantial full-calf prize binding blocked in gilt with the arms of St Bede's School, Eastbourne, and inscribed on the front paste-down as the school's Latin prize, Division I, awarded in July 1901 to E. M. Bayfield. Griffith (1857–1906) is best known now as a pioneering British science-fiction and future-war novelist, a contemporary and rival of H.G. Wells; he made his living cranking out imperial-adventure non-fiction for Pearson's press alongside his SF. Men Who Have Made the Empire is pulp-adjacent popular history in the heroic-tableau register, illustrated throughout by Stanley L. Wood and others — the house visual language of late-Victorian boys' adventure publishing. What lifts this copy out of the ordinary-Griffith pile is the binding and the presentation plate together: a full tan calf with five raised bands, elaborate gilt compartment tooling, a dark leather title label, and the school arms blocked in gilt on the front cover — an open book lettered AUT DISCERE AUT DOCERE ('either to learn or to teach') with heraldic shield, banners for 'St. BEDE'S SCHOOL' above and 'EASTBOURNE' below. St Bede's, founded 1895, was a middle-class Anglican prep school on the Sussex coast, part of the Eastbourne network of schools that fed boys up into public schools and on toward Oxbridge and imperial service. The Division I Latin prize marks Bayfield as top-stream. The principal's signature on the plate (partially legible as 'Francis [middle initial] [surname]') is consistent with the post-1900 regime after the school passed to new ownership. A concentrated object of its moment — a Latin prizewinner, age about twelve, being handed as his reward an illustrated popular history of empire-building in a binding that treats the reward as a serious one. Condition is honestly 'good': calf rubbed on boards and spine with surface wear; gilt tooling and prize-plate ink still crisp and legible; textblock age-toned but clean; plates clean. Strong narrative provenance for collectors of school prize books, late-Victorian imperial publishing, prep-school history, or the pre-WWI public-school-to-officer-class pipeline in which boys exactly Bayfield's age were being formed for events that began thirteen years later. Full calf prize binding (1901), gilt-blocked St Bede's School arms on front board Third edition, C. Arthur Pearson Ltd, 1899 text; single-volume full-calf prize binding dated July 1901.…

Description de la boutique

A small personal library finding new shelves: fine-press limited editions, antiquarian leather-and-cloth, signed firsts, and the occasional 19th-century oddity. I describe condition the way I'd want one described to me — gilt rub, bumped corners, foxing where it's there — and I pack like the next owner cares as much as I do. Cambridge, Massachusetts; smoke-free.
