Aelphaba, Queen of the Dragons, has been in exile for four centuries.
She has a favor to ask of Merlin.
He has eleven days to pay it.
The favor requires him to enter a court he has been banned from, in a disguise that fools almost everyone, to place a document in a filing cabinet while spending the night as a silverfish. It requires Nimue — who has been paying attention to Oberon's court for her own reasons and knows exactly where the archive is. It requires a sprite named Sable who has been trying to tell someone something important for three years, and a faun named Orrin who has been making maps of a catastrophe because no one official was interested in making them.
In the outer territories of Avalon, something has been building in the dark for four centuries. The court does not know. The court has been carefully managed not to know.
In Gore, Morgana is writing a document that cannot be walked back. She has arranged a Cardinal, positioned five kings, and built something architectural and patient and precise. Merlin is free and depleted and thinking. She has been waiting a very long time for the two of them to be in the same room.
In Camelot, Arthur holds a sourceless certainty he has been careful not to examine too directly. Kay has already drafted the letters. Gawain has made a promise he is going to find very difficult to keep. And somewhere in a field three miles north of the tournament grounds, something is waiting to be found.
The third serial in The Merlin Chronicles — a dark Arthurian fantasy told in episodes, in which the legend you know is the architecture around something much older, considerably more complicated, and not yet finished.
The Merlin Chronicles
