A propos de cet article

Unusual and rather wonderful trade catalogue of medallions featuring a wide variety of relief imagery, including that of famous individuals -- Shakespeare, Robert Burns, Lord Byron, etc. -- animals -- dogs, cats, horses, birds, etc. -- coat-of-arms, ships, nostalgic genre scenes, words, planes, nursery rhyme scenes, etc. From the solemn to the whimsical, the company clearly produced imagery wherever it sensed a demand or potential demand. The use of such medallions had to have been also diverse, as mounts on furniture, boxes, books. Not that we have ourselves seen the use of these kinds of mounts on objects often. N.d., but surely late 1930s. With profiles of George VI and his consort Queen Elizabeth we know the catalogue had to have been produced in 1936 or later since that was when George became king. 8vo. 24 by 18.5 cm. Also there is no company information in the catalogue, but since we have had a larger album containing many of the same pieces, we assume this was produced by the same entity, especially since the same term, Metcraft, is used, and this isn't a standard word in English. That company was the Walsall Lithographic Company, based in Walsall, which is outside of Birmingham. Many of the designs, though, were undoubtedly created long before. In all, there are in this catalogue 96 pieces of metal medallions on six leaves, with tissue guards between leaves. The pieces are of various sizes and shapes -- see pictures. Four of the pieces are now detached or loose. And fourteen spots with stock numbers and remnants of paste but the metal pieces are no longer there. The pieces are probably all made of a very thin, easily moldable base metal but made to look like copper, brass, silver, gold. Most are monochromatic, in the color associated with such metals, but a few are painted, or have touches of painted detail. Condition: The black cover, of a light card stock, the same as the leaves with medallions attached, is stained and rough around its edges. Tears along spine fold. The tissue guards also have a grubbiness, partly from absorbing the pressure from the medallion's reliefs. Some of the leaves with the mounts have small corner chips. We already mentioned the missing pieces and the paste vestiges. Generally-speaking, the album comes off as weather-beaten, but the medallions themselves, whether attached or loose, are all in great shape, with no evident wear from the passage of time. Wraps. String through stab holes.…
