A propos de cet article

A Cold War era internal USAF training document. 3-hole punched and stapled leaves 21x27cm, printed by Air Force 2220th Field Printing Plant 8/55. (2)pp illustrated cover leaf with b/w Aramco scene at Abqaiq, 82pp. Plus a (1)pp covering errata letter attaching 2 full-page b/w maps to be inserted in the main document between pp46-47, signed by USAF Major and Assistant Adjutant Edward M. Gladue by order of the Commander. Good or better, lightly creased and foxed with no sign of a back cover leaf to the main document. It is however complete with all 10 study Items present as called for. The opening Notes for Reservists state that "Because of its material backwardness, its distance from the US, and its strange people and customs, the Middle East is not very well understood by Americans. Yet it merits careful study because of its strategic importance to the national interests of the US". This was issued to raise awareness of the region's importance, the contributing factors (geography, religion, population), and movements of people and conflicts affecting international relations. It includes an opening argument and reading list followed by 10 Items: (1) Middle East map (centred on the Arabian Peninsula showing oil fields, pipelines, refineries and railways); (2) Suggested Pronunciations; (3) "Center of Soviet Aspirations" (extracted from Fortune Magazine, 1951); (4) "The Middle East: Geography and Area, People and Resources" (extracted from a US Naval Academy publication); (5) "The Middle East in New Perspective" (presenting the Israeli and Arab Cases, extracted from a Dept of State Bulletin, 1954); (6) "Nationalism in Israel" (article from J.C. Hurewitz's Nationalism in the Middle East, 1952); (7) "The New Israel" (reprinted from American Geographical Society Focus, 1951). The 2 errata maps showing land classification and irrigation, and relief and rainfall in Israel insert here; (8) "Islam: The Misunderstood Religion" (James Michener reprinted from Reader's Digest, 1955); (9) "Arab Problems" (disunity and political instability, extracted from Security and the Middle East, an intersectarian committee publication submitted to the US President); (10) "Social Tensions in the Middle East" (Emil Lengyel covering history, background, oil and economy, unrest, Soviet influence, leadership, Turkey and Israel, rights for Arab women, and US role, extracted from Annals 1951). …
