Item description from seller

The Minor Tactics of Chess: A Treatise on the Deployment of the Forces in Obedience to Strategic Principle, Franklin K. Young & Edwin C. Howell â€" New Impression Publication: London, Chatto & Windus, 1910 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [viii], 221. Condition Report: Good. The original publisher's brown cloth binding remains structurally sound and tight, exhibiting moderate, acceptable shelf-wear commensurate with its age. Notably, there is mild bumping and slight fraying to the spine ends, rubbing to the board corners, and a slight outward bowing to the covers. Despite this, the highly decorative black and orange chess pieces stamped to the boards and spine remain remarkably bright and unoxidised, avoiding the heavy rubbing often seen on the covers of instructional manuals from this era. Internally, the text block is firmly square; however, the edges are noticeably tanned, and there is light, pervasive age-toning and sporadic mild foxing throughout the margins, most prominent on the preliminary pages and endpapers. Catalogue Note: This 1910 "New Impression" by Chatto & Windus stands as an enduring physical testament to the systematic analysis of chess strategy prevalent at the turn of the twentieth century. While not a true first edition, originally published in 1895, this early reprint retains the distinct, highly attractive decorative cloth binding typical of Chatto & Windus's handsome sporting and leisure publications. The volume is complete with a frontispiece depicting a 'Primary Base' set-up using classic Staunton chessmen. Devoid of institutional stamps, prominent bookplates, or distracting heavy annotations, it presents as a highly authentic and clean example for the chess historian or antiquarian enthusiast. Though earlier nineteenth-century editions of Young and Howell’s work are increasingly scarce on the open market, this well-preserved impression offers a visually striking and accessible piece of early modern chess literature. The Minor Tactics of Chess represents a rigorous, analytical approach to one of the world's oldest games. Moving away from the romantic, ad-hoc style of nineteenth-century play, Franklin K. Young and Edwin C. Howell attempt to codify chess into a precise science, outlining the meticulous deployment of pieces in accordance with strict strategic principles. By establishing "primary bases" and defining the "objective plane" of the chessboard, the authors provide players with a structured, almost mathematical framework for dominating their opponents. Today, it remains a fascinating historical artefact for modern chess enthusiasts, capturing the transitional era between classical play and hypermodern theory.
