Complete in five volumes. Matching set is bound in full calf leather. Covers are plain. Hubbed spines are heavily ornamented in gilt and five raised bands with red and green leather labels. Volume I frontispiece is a black and white engraving of author Conyers Middleton. Predominantly written in English with some Greek, Hebrew and Latin throughout. On a shelf, this set spans 6 inches. Conyers Middleton (1683-1750), was an English clergyman best known for his work "Life of Cicero". Even though he was highly regarded as one of the best stylists in English during the period, his success was fraught by controversy and disputes. Middleton's tone and personality comes through in his writing within this set. A fascinating individual indeed. - VOLUME I: "A Free Inquiry into the Miraculous Powers Which are Supposed to Have Subsisted in the Christian Church, From the Earliest Ages through Several Successive Centuries." cxix, [1] 121-147 pp. Includes Dr. Middleton's Letters to Mr. Warburton at the back. Also includes an unpaginated catalog of Middleton's works along with an advertisement. These pages are out of order, but present. - VOLUME II: Contents include: "Remarks on two Pamphlets lately published against Dr. Middleton's Introductory Discourse", "A Vindication of the Free Inquiry into the miraculous Powers", "A Preface to an intended Answer to all the Objections made against the Free Inquiry", Some cursory Reflections on the Dispute or Dissension which happened at Antioch, between Apostles Peter and Paul", "Reflections on the VAriations also, or Inconsistencies, which are found among the Four Evangelists, in their different Accounts of the same Facts", "An Essay on the Gift of Tongues", "Some Short Remarks on a STory told by the Ancients, concerning St. John the Evangelist, and Cerinthus the Heretic; and on the Use which is made of it by the Moderns, to enforce the Duty of shunning Heretics", "Essay on the Allegorical and Literal Interpretation of the Creation and Fall of Man". XXIX, [1] 31-456 pp. - VOLUME III: Contents include: "A Letter to Dr. Waterland", "A Defense of the Letter to Dr. Waterland", "Some Remarks on a Reply to the Defense of the Letter to Dr. Waterland", "Remarks on some Observations", "Remarks, Paragraph by Paragraph, upon the Proposals lately published by Richard Bentley", "Some farther Remarks, Paragraph by Paragraph, upon Proposals", and "A Table of some of our Editor's apparent Contradictions and false Assertions observed in the foregoing Remarks". 468 pp. - VOLUME IV: Contents include: "Oratio de novo Physiologiae explicandae munere ex celeberrimi Woodwardi Testamento instituto", " De Latinarium literarum pronunciatione Dissertatio", "Bibliotheca Cantabrigiensis ordinandae methodus quaedam; quam Domino Procancellario Senatuique Academico considerandam & perficiendam officii et pietatis ergo propnit", "De Medicorum apud veteres Romanos degentium conditione Dissertatio; contra viros celeberrimos Jac. Sponium & Ric. Meadiu, M. DD. Servilem atque Ignobilem eam fuisse ostenditur", "A Treatise on the Roman Senate, in two parts", "Preface to the translations of Cicero's letters to Brutus, and of Burus to Cicero". Foldout table at page 52. 408 pp. VOLUME V: Contents include: "A Letter from Rome, shewing an exact conformity between popery and pagans isin, with the Prefatory Discourse, in answer to the objections of a popish writer, and a Postscript, in which Mr. Warburton's opinion concerning the paganism of Rom is considered", "An Examination of the Lord Bishop of London's Discourses on the Use and Intent of Prophecy, with some Cursory Animadversions on his Appendix, or Additional Dissertation, containing a farther inquiry into the Mosaic account of the Fall", "A Dissertation concerning the Origin of Printing in England, shewing, that it was first introduced and practised by our countryman William Caxton, at Westminster; and not as is commonly believed, by a foreign Printer at Oxford". Description de la boutique
Since 2005, Shelley and Son Books has been passionate about books, and preserving their importance for current and future generations. We believe that virtue and beauty have a close relationship. By reading we gain knowledge. In knowledge we find things that inform our choices and beliefs. Therefore, as booksellers, we see that books have an aesthetic value and a heuristic value. We specialize in The Inklings, primarily "The Seven'": C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, G. K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield and Charles Williams. A sub-specialty is our significant collection of Christian Theology. But you'll also find works across the centuries, first editions, signed copies, and even modern books, too, across a broad selection of categories and genres. Customer service is of utmost importance to us, and our friendly staff is always happy to help. We assure our clients books of quality, as each copy is carefully graded and shipped with care. Located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we can be found on Main Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina, (just south of Asheville). We are primarily an online bookstore, but we invite you to make an appointment for an on-site visit! Shelley and Son Books is owned by Stan Shelley. …
