Octavo, softbound (slick white stiff wrappers), 154 pp. Fine. From Foreword: Music lovers are not always aware of the fact that composers, unknown to them, may be very well known in their own country. Thus Stanislaw Moniuszko here remains to many people a name connected with music but not much more, for we have had little opportunity of hearing his works. Nevertheless his best known opera Halka (it is as an operatic composer that he is most widely known) was performed by the students of London University Musical Society in 1962, while a later opera The Haunted Manor was staged by the University of Bristol Opera Society in 1971. It is to be hoped that these manifestations of interest in the composer will be followed by a fully professional performance by one of our established Opera Companies. In this book, Mr. Maciejewski gives us an engaging picture of Moniuzko -- clearly a natural composer as well as a charming and good-natured man, who, after the usual struggles to achieve recognition, became head of the Warsaw Opera. This seems not to have prevented him from continuing his career as a prolific composer whose work may be said to bridge the gap in Polish music between Chopin and Szymanowski.
