One of a numbered limited edition - this copy being unnumbered, and is consequently out of series. Translated into English from the French by Ezra Pound, with a twelve-page postscript by Ezra Pound at the back of the book. ***Very good in buff cloth-covered boards over a blue-grey spine, with gilt titles to the spine. Boards clean and unmarked. Corners slightly bumped. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine of boards slightly faded and rubbed. All edges of text-block untrimmed (rough-cut and produced with high-quality thick paper). Internally also very good, with an owner's name and address ink stamp to the top of the front free endpaper. Very light sporadic foxing to prelims and last few pages. Very small light foxing mark to top of some text pages which are mostly clean. Spine tight. ***In a good only beige printed dustwrapper, with mauve titles and decorative borders to the front panel - priced at 21s. net on the front panel. The dustwrapper is quite rubbed at th edges, and quite heavily foxed and marked. The front panel also has a few light sporadic watery red ink speckles. There is some splitting to the fragile dustwrapper along the edges of the spine. The spine of the dustwrapper is browned and faded. Head and tail of spine rubbed with small chips. Short closed tear to the top edge of the back panel. One-inch closed tear to the bottom corner of the back panel. Small chip and closed tear to the top corner of the front panel. Small chip to the bottom corner of the front panel. Small chip and associated closed tear to the top edge of the dustwrapper adjoining the head of the spine. Off-setting marks from old sellotape (now removed) to the edges of the back of the dustwrapper. ***183 pages - including a detailed twelve-page postscript by Ezra Pound and a three-page bibliography at the back of the book. 264mm x 204mm. ***'This remarkable work of research by one of Europe's foremost men of letters is a careful scientific inquiry into the subject of sex in relation to man and the lower animals. It deals in a fresh and masterly way with the biological basis of the sexual instinct. ***All phases of the sexual ceremony are here discussed; the quaint and curious customs among obscure tribes, many of them ritualistic in nature, are treated. The physical manifestations of sexual love, its organic and mechanistic faculties, are carefully analyzed in relation to its psychological factors.' (Quote taken from the front panel of the dustwrapper) ***The first British edition of American modernist poet Ezra Pound's (1885-1972) translation of the French Symbolist Remy de Gourmont's (1858-1915) treatise on sex within the animal kingdom. A limited edition work, produced on quality antique laid paper - a scarce find in the original dustwrapper. Of interest to the early works of the American Modernist poet Ezra Pound. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. …
