Nanoparticles in Polymer Systems for Biomedical Applications

The volume includes presentations of technological and research accomplishments along with novel approaches in nanomedicine and nanotechnology. It explores the different types of nanomedicinal drugs with their production and commercial significance. Other topics discussed are the use of natural and synthetic nanoparticles for the production of drugs, different types of nanoparticles systems, drug carriers, wound-healing antimicrobial activity, effects of natural materials in nanomedicine, and toxicity of nanoparticles. Jince Thomas is currently working as a Senior Research Fellow at the International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India. His research focuses on polymer blends, polymer nanocomposites, conductive and insulating polymer composites and biomaterials. He has two master’s degrees (MTech in Polymer Science and Technology and MSc in Chemistry). He also worked at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, USA. He has authored three book chapters.

Sabu Thomas, PhD, is the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University and Founding Director of the International and Inter University Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, India. He is also a Professor of polymer science and engineering at the School of Chemical Sciences of the same university. He is a fellow of many professional bodies. Professor Thomas has (co-)authored many papers in international peer-reviewed journals in the area of polymer science and nanotechnology. He has organized several international conferences. Professor Thomas’s research group has specialized in many areas of polymers, which includes polymer blends, fiber-filled polymer composites, particulate-filled polymer composites and their morphological characterization, ageing and degradation, pervaporation phenomena, sorption and diffusion, interpenetrating polymer systems, recyclability and reuse of waste plastics and rubbers, elastomeric crosslinking, dual porous nanocomposite scaffolds for tissue engineering, etc. Professor Thomas’s research group has extensive exchange programs with different industries and research and academic institutions all over the world and is performing world-class collaborative research in various fields. Professor Thomas’s Center is equipped with various sophisticated instruments and has established state-of-the-art experimental facilities, which cater to the needs of researchers within the country and abroad. He has more than 700 publications, with citation count of 31190. The H index of Prof. Thomas is 81, and he has six patents to his credit. Prof. Thomas has edited 73 books. He is a reviewer for many international journals. He has received MRSI, CRSI, nanotech medals for his outstanding work in nanotechnology. Dr. Thomas recently received an Honoris Causa (DSc) from the University of South Brittany, France, and University Lorraine, Nancy, France.

Nandakumar Kalarikkal, PhD,  is an Associate Professor at the School of Pure and Applied Physics and Joint Director of the International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, India. His research activities involve applications of nanostructured materials, laser plasma, phase transitions, etc. He is the recipient of research fellowships and associateships from prestigious government organizations such as the Department of Science and Technology and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research of the Government of India. He has active collaboration with national and international scientific institutions in India, South Africa, Slovenia, Canada, France, Germany, Malaysia, Australia, and US. He has published more than 130 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has also co-edited several books of scientific interest and co-authored many book chapters.

Jiya Jose, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the International and Inter University Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, India. Prior to that, she was a senior research fellow at the National Institute of Oceanography and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, India. She has co-authored over 20 scientific articles published in international journals and has co-edited chapters in seven books. She has participated at many professional conferences and workshops. She was awarded a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from CSIR-HRDG, Government of India and was a recipient of the Prestigious UGC–Dr. S. Kothari Post Doctoral Fellowship. Dr. Jose acts as a reviewer for the journal Nano-Structures & Nano-Objects. She holds a PhD in Marine Sciences from the Cochin University of Science and Technology, National Institute of Oceanography, Cochin, India.
