Frederick Douglass (c.1818-1895) was born a slave in Maryland and escaped to freedom in the North at the age of 20. Douglass became an influential writer, publisher, orator, United States ambassador, and leader of the abolitionist movement during his lifetime. In 1845, Douglass published his first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. The narrative provides a firsthand account of the dehumanization experienced by enslaved people in the United States and personal testimony on the evils of slavery. The book was a critical success and brought international attention and urgency for the abolition of slavery.
