1896. New and enlarged edition. Title-page and 174pp., tissue-guarded frontispiece, 23 figures in the main text and 4 figures in the appendix on the spine. Edwin Checkley (1847?1925) was a British-born American athlete, physician, and the author. He was supposedly "one of the strongest men in America" in 1890. His book 'A Natural Method of Physical Training' was first published in 1895 and advocates light bodyweight exercises without dumbbells. He writes in his note to the present edition that he has found no necessity for material modification in any of the chapters, and in extending the book he has aimed to make some points more clear, and to enlarge in a general way the usefulness of the volume. It includes chapters on How to Carry the Body, How to Breathe, The Joints and Their Development, The Treatment of Obesity, Training for Women, and A Word About Children. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with darker brown titling on the spine and titling with an illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards and slight cocking to ther spine. The spine ends are lightly bumped with wear and some loss of colour to the cloth and the titling on the spine is worn. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers.
