Based on workshops co-organized by Japan's St. Andrew University and Taiwan's National Chengchi University, this book provides readers with the toolbox for navigating the regional dynamics of political economy in Southeast Asia, with special focus on exploring the key factors determining the shifting dynamics. Organized in three parts, namely, geopolitical and security factors, alternative fields for regional cooperation, and the regional considerations of Southeast Asia, the chapters in the book feature key factors determining the political economy of the region. Written by authors hailing from varied backgrounds, this book is also a joint research effort on policy discussion and timely assessment of COVID-19 recovery plans in Southeast Asia.

Alan Hao Yang is a distinguished professor at Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies (GIEAS); Executive Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) and Deputy Director of the Institute of International Relations (IIR) at National Chengchi University, Taiwan. He is also the Executive Director of Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation (TAEF). Dr Yang is also a non-resident senior fellow of George H W Bush Foundation for US-China Relations (based in Huston) since 2021 and a non-resident fellow of the China Desk of the Reconnaissance Research in Kuwait since July 2021. Dr Yang's research interests cover international relations theories, international relations and regionalism in Southeast Asia, environmental governance and disaster resilience, border politics and politics of resistance in Southeast Asia, foreign policy, and soft power analysis with a specific focus on China's Confucius Institute and Taiwan's New Southbound Policy.

Masahiro Matsumura is Professor of International Politics at St. Andrew's University (Momoyama Gakuin Daigaku) in Osaka. His research interests include national security, Japan-US alliance, armament policy, and defense industrial policy. He obtained an MA from Ohio University and a PhD from the University of Maryland at College Park. He served as a visiting fellow and scholar at Harvard University, Brookings Institution, Heritage Foundation, Cato Institute, US National Defense University Institute for National Strategic Studies, and National Chengchi University Institute of International Relation. His articles appear in Survival, Issues & Studies, International Journal of China Studies, International Journal of Korean Unification Studies, Defense Analysis, Journal of Military and Strategic Studies, Jebat, Austral, among others. He has published a dozen of books and monographs, including Japan's National Defense After US Hegemonic Decline (in Japanese) and Exploring Unofficial Japan–Taiwan Security Policy Coordination After the New Guidelines for Japan–US Defense Cooperation (In English). He has published many op-eds including those in the Project Syndicate, Japan Times and Taipei Times.
