Item description from seller

CHAMPION S. CHASE was a 19th century American lawyer, politician and pioneer who served as the first Attorney General of the state of Nebraska. Chase served as Mayor of Omaha. Chase also served in the Civil War and reached the rank of Major. He was first cousin of Supreme Court Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase. Offering a 1 ½ pp, 8 x 9 ¾ ALS on Office Of Attorney for the State stationary regarding a claim against the historic and notable Union Pacific Railroad for land damages that occurred in 1867, the same year Nebraska became a state. The railroad played a central role in the founding and rapid development of Nebraska in the 19th century. It transformed the territory from frontier prairie into a transportation and commercial hub. The Union Pacific was authorized by the Pacific Railway Act, signed by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. The railroad was later involved in the Credit Mobilier Scandal in the 1870s, which involved scandalous maneuvering in construction contracts and involved several notable politicians, including Schuyler Colfax, vice president under Grant, James A. Garfield, then a congressman, later President and Speaker of the House James G. Blaine. Chase writes an attorney, regarding a claim by Mrs. M.E. Cody against the Union Pacific for damages she received on the road near Wood River Station about a year ago. It may become necessary to take our depositions. I should prefer however that we should be here at the trial. Will you please write me what you know about the case and also give me the name of some Notary Public in our county before whom your evidence can be taken. Wood River Station was along the main Union Pacific line built in the late 1860s. Folds, light toning. In excellent condition. Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer. We also offer a 30-day return policy. If you discover a problem or are dissatisfied with an item, please contact us immediately. Our goal is to please every customer. We are pleased to be members of The Manuscript Society, Universal Autograph Collectors Club, The Ephemera Society, the Southern New England Antiquarian Booksellers and the Preferred Autograph Dealers and Auction Houses.
