Signatures run as follows: A-5G4, 5H2. Collated, complete. Bookplate of Michael Cecil de Courcey Peele to the front paste down. Giles Jacob was a legal and literary author. Whilst Jacob's legal works are his most well-known, his ouevre was incredibly diverse. Among his literary works appear; The Rape of the Smock, 1717, a parody of Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock and a farce Love in a Wood, or, The Country Squire, 1714. Pope's referred to the legal author in book three of the 1728 edition of The Dunciad as the following: "Jacob, the Scourge of Grammar, mark with awe,Nor less revere him, Blunderbuss of Law." Bound in full calf, rebacked with the original boards retained. Marbled end papers renewed, original blanks retained. Bookplate of Michael Cecil de Courcey Peele to paste down. Prominent marks and loss to the original boards. Renewed spine, very smart. Internally, firmly bound. Light tiding to the gutter of occasional leaves. Pages clean with scattered spotting and marginal age toning, heavier to some leaves. The odd closed tear to extremities, text unobscurred. Ink inscription to upper title page. Very Good Indeed.
