This book was originally published in 1856 and then reprinted many times, in 1863, 1867, 1871, 1873, 1880, 1882, 1889, 1894, and maybe other years as well. The Kirtsos Historical Library of Homoeopathic Medicine no. 1758 (citing the 1856 edition). This book should not be confused with another book with a similar title: F. A. [Friedrich August] Günther: New Manual of Homoeopathic Veterinary Medicine; or the Homoeopathic Treatment of the Horse, the Ox, the Sheep, the Dog, and Other Domestic Animals, which was originally published in 1847, with later printings. The translator Charles Hempel did use material from Günther and others in his " numerous additions" to Schaefer's book offered here. Hempel writes in his Preface (p. xvi): "In order to render this work as complete as possible, a good many interesting and highly useful additions from Guenther, Haycock, Youatt and other writers on Veterinary Surgery and Medicine, have been incorporated in this work." About the translator Charles J. Hempel, quoting from Kirtsos Historical Library of Homoeopathic Medicine no. 1012: "Charles J. Hempel was a major contributor to American homoeopathy as an author and translator of German homoeopathic literature (Bradford, Homoeopathic Bibliography, 143). A native of Solingen in the Ruhr Valley, Hempel deferred military service long enough to study at the Collège de France and the Université de Paris before emigrating to New York in 1835. Supporting himself with translating, Hempel quickly mastered English and became familiar with many noted figures in science, literature, social reform, and Swedenborgian thought. In 1845 he received his medical degree from the University of the City of New York. Charles J. Hempel became a member of the American Institute of Homoeopathy in 1846. Even before his graduation, however, he was inclined toward homoeopathy, and in 1846 he published the first edition of The Homoeopathic Domestic Medicine. 'From 1846 to 1870 Hempel translated twenty-five major works (including the homoeopathic texts of Hahnemann, Jahr, Baehr, Gollman, Mure & Tessler)' (Hoolihan, Christopher, An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform, University of Rochester Press, volume 1: 446).".
