Family is everything. It’s one of those benign platitudes that means very little unless you put it into action. Sometimes you see it on a sign at someone’s house, but what does it actually mean?
For many athletes, family means sports. They got involved in sports because of a father or mother, or perhaps a sibling. They continued to rise in sports with a supportive family behind them, driving them to games or paying for equipment.
Every athlete has a support system behind them that helps them make it from high school to college and eventually to the professional level. For some athletes, that family comes in the form of coaches who act as mentors and drive them to games, or grandparents who play catch with them in the backyard. It changes for every athlete, and does not necessarily have to be a group of blood relatives to make a family. Sometimes that family can even be a group of friends who played together for years. Perhaps they challenged each other to get better until one of them was finally able to break away and become successful.
