A propos de cet article

Early U.S. edition. 8 pages of preliminaries, then 556 pages + portrait frontispiece and a further 20 black & white illustrated plates. The book is bound in the publisher's dark brown cloth over bevelled boards, lettered and decorated in gilt and black, the cloth is rubbed and marked, with bumping to the corners, the cloth is nearly split along both front and rear hinges, requiring handling with care and there is some loss to the spine ends. The text block is slightly foxed, marked, dusty and age toned, with cracking at points, though the binding remains reasonably firm overall, the dark brown endpapers are present front and rear, with cracking to the gutters, there are short closed tears and small chips to the edges of a few pages and plates, with no loss of text. From the library of notable parapsychologist and paranormal investigator, Alan Gauld (1932-2024), with his small bookplate to the front pastedown and neatly written name in ink to the rear of the frontispiece, also occasional pencil notes and some highlighted passages. Additionally with some quite distinguished earlier provenance, with stamps to the title page and final page indicating that it was owned by 'The Fraternity of the Inner Light' in Bayswater, the occult group founded by Dion Fortune, which changed its name a few years later, suggesting that this book was part of the group's library during its early days. Quite an uncommon title, which appears in at least 4 different cloth colours and with variation to the text block, this copy probably a slightly later unacknowledged issue, differing from the copy held by the Library of Congress in that the "Note to the illustrations" is absent, and there are 16 fewer plates, this being key as the note regarding the illustrations refers to their placement, which in this copy is no longer relevant. The first edition appeared the year previously in Britain, the main text block was printed in England by John Heywood, Excelsior Steam Printing and Bookbinding Works, Hulme Hall Road, Manchester, and there seems no difference between the main text block and that of the Library of Congress copy, suggesting that Britten exported a quantity of sheets and dribbled them out in various formats according to demand and finances over an unknown period. A comprehensive history of Spiritualism during its heyday, with detailed accounts of supernatural phenomena, and biographical portraits of the most famous mediums of the period, many of whom were known personally by Emma Hardinge. This copy a battered, seemingly cheaper later issue, however the provenance would indicate that its battle-scars may well be due to having been regularly consulted by Dion Fortune and her immediate acolytes during the early years of her occult group's activities, so the future owner can admire them as likely sort-of honourably received wounds.…
