A propos de cet article

6 vols., 8vo. Engraved frontispiece portrait by Michaux by H. B. Hall after Rembrandt Peale, 277 hand-colored plates (comprising 156 hand-colored engraved plates after the Redoutà brothers, Pancrace Bessa, et al, with tissue-guards; 121 hand-colored lithographed plates, with tissue-guards); light occasional spotting. Publisherâs full green morocco, spines gilt-decorated and -lettered in six compartments, covers with elaborate gilt borders and large gilt vignette of a morning-glory, a.e.g.; some rubbing to joints and extremities, head of spine on one volume chipped.A handsome set of this classic work on American natural history. âFew American color plate books had such lasting popularity as this classic work on American trees, or as tangled a publication history â¦. In 1856 a fire destroyed the premises of the publisher of the joint edition. The Michaux plates were saved, but the Nuttall stones were evidently lost, and the later joint editions used new stonesâ (Reese).Michauxâs work was originally published in English in Paris and Philadelphia in 1818-19 and was reprinted many times. Michauxâs text was translated and annotated by J. Jay Smith. Robert P. Smithâs edition was first published in 1850-51. The plates are printed from the original French copperplates partly engraved by Redoutà . They were brought from Paris to Philadelphia by William Maclure. The Nuttall volumes have plates printed from lithography and hand-colored by A. Biegeman. This was one of the last editions to have hand-colored plates; after 1865 they were printed in colors.Thomas Nuttall was one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day, traveling extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the Far West in the 1820s and 30s to gather botanical specimens. His work, designed to supplement that of Michaux, covers eastern species missed by the Frenchman and new species Nuttall had gathered in the Midwest and West. His work first appeared in Philadelphia in 1842-49. The publishers then issued it in a combined set with Michauxâs work in a uniform configuration. The fanciful publisherâs bindings with their baroque botanical motifs are a delightful compliment to the work of Michaux and Nuttall.References: Reese, Stamped with National Character, 21; Sabin 48695 Provenance: J. W. Otley (signature in ink on title). Possibly J. W. Otley, 19th-century cartographer, active in New Jersey.…
