Revue de presse
Ursula Buchan, Garden Editor of the Daily Telegraph, writes on 24 November 2007: "The apple is one of the most potent symbols of local distinctiveness, hence the importance of Britain's annual Apple Day in October, which promotes varieties that do well in particular localities. That is one reason why I welcome 'The Northern Pomona:Apples for Cool Climates, edited by Linden Hawthorne and illustrated by Bridget Gillespie with contributions from many North of England-based experts, including Peter Blackburne-Maze, Barry Potter, Richard Borrie and Dr Elke Laver. This book provides detailed descriptions of some 100 apple cultivars which are suited to conditions in the North of England and Scotland, including their history, detailed botanical characteristics, pollination group and date, and picking and ripening dates. In other words, it has all the information you need to decide whether to grow them in your Northern garden, but which you would struggle to find elsewhere. It also provides more than 200 apple-orientated recipes, suggesting suitable varieties in many cases. There is guidance on how to manage old orchards and create new ones and advice for the home gardener on cultivation and storage. And the illustrations - 51 watercolours of apple varieties by the RHS Gold Medal-winning artist Bridget Gillespie - are a delight. Perhaps most interesting of all, this book has seen the light of day thanks to subscriptions from a substantial number of individuals, their names on a roll of honour at the beginning; this is a publishing stratagem which was common in the 18th century but is rare today, and it says much for the enthusiasm of the authors. All profits will go to help sustain the fruit collections at the Helmsley Walled Garden in North Yorkshire, where many of these apples grow. All in all, this is the book for all those who pursue love (of apples) in a cold climate. --The Daily Telegraph, 24 November 2007
