260x175mm. First UK illustrated edition. ppVIII,234,(2) with 8 fine photogravure plates, all except frontispiece with tissue-guard, and 14 in-text photogravure illustrations. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Integral olive-green silk ribbon place marker. Original pale grey cloth, backstrip and front cover with blocked titles and magnolia-flower decorations in cream, sand-yellow, grey and black. Backstrip faintly toned. Front cover slightly rubbed, and faintly toned towards upper- & fore-edges; rear lightly & patchily toned, and with a few pale spot-stains - the largest of diameter up to 8mm. No dust jacket. Fore- & lower edges of text-block toned, endpapers deeply & patchily so. Faint offsetting from frontispiece to title-page, and from in-text illustrations to pages opposite. Place marker faded to gold where protruding from top edge; its presence between pages 94 & 95 over prolonged period resulting in light discoloration along inner margins of these pages, and hardly-visible steep diagonal impressions of diminishing effect back to page 89 and up to page 100. Short creases or creased and/or furled corner tips at lower outer corners of a number of leaves from page 177 to page 196, the longest crease of length 25mm at pages 193/194; all well away from text, and plate facing page 190 unaffected. Small triangular segment detached from upper outer corner of final leaf, well away from imprimatur at recto; the segment retained between blank verso and rear flyleaf.
