A propos de cet article

FIRST EDITION, lightly toned with some spotting to prelims and endleaves, pp. v, [1], 79, [1], 8vo, contemporary presentation binding of full diced red morocco gilt, flat spine with gilt crown stamp in compartments, richly gilt turn ins with marbled endpapers; extremities bumped and the spine ends a little chipped; authorial dedication inscription, very good. Attractive presentation copy of this book analysing (and advertising) the quality of the waters at Dinsdale (Co. Peacock provides the results of his various experiments into the chemical composition of the water; 'the large quantity of hepatic air is most remarkable, and probably exceeds the proportion in any medicated water of which the analysis is before the public'. He also sings the praises of its location on the banks of the Tees: 'Perhaps no medicated water in Great Britain can boast of greater advantages in situation than this'. In 1829 Lambton built a lavish hotel on the spot, but it failed to prosper and by 1845 the property had been sold for residential use. (Waring 790).…
