A propos de cet article

Staplebound wraps. 8.5" x 11". 16pp. Exhibition catalog, stapled-bound wrappers with mild creasing and scuffs, black covers with cover image reproducing Nerdrum's Self-Portrait (oil on canvas, 36½ × 31 in.). Square format, plates in color on coated stock, text pages with epigraphs from the artist interspersed between full-page reproductions. Published on the occasion of Nerdrum's first one-artist show at Weinstein Gallery, 253 Grant Avenue, San Francisco - the first San Francisco gallery exhibition of his work. Contains a foreword by Rowland Weinstein (Weinstein Gallery, 2003), situating Nerdrum as, in Weinstein's words, one of the most important living figurative painters, and giving biographical background: born in Sweden, raised from infancy in Norway (1944), self-taught in Old Master technique - grinding his own pigments, stretching his own canvases, working exclusively from live models. Notes Nerdrum's 1983 one-artist show in New York, his inclusion in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Palace of the Legion of Honor (San Francisco), the Walker Art Center, and the National Gallery in Oslo, and his January 1999 ARTnews cover. Plates reproduced, with captioned titles, medium, and dimensions: Self-Portrait, oil on canvas, 36½ × 31 in. [cover] Summer Nights, oil on canvas, 71¼ × 75½ in. Release, oil on canvas [4]. Guiding, oil on canvas, 74 × 61 in. Wanderers by the Sea, oil on canvas, 78 × 101½ in. Woman by the Sea, oil on canvas, [74] × 69 in. Transmission, oil on canvas Self-Portrait in Boat, oil on canvas, 64½ × 76½ in. Each plate faces a page with a brief statement from Nerdrum himself ("Avant-garde artists want to shock. I paint for eternity"; "Talent must be unfolded through skill."; "The old masters are my guides, nature is my God"; "Today you cannot be another 17th century master. You have to be the best"), plus a closing gathering of critical reception: quotes from Hilton Kramer (Arts and Antiques, 1996; New York Observer, 1997), Kenneth Baker (San Francisco Chronicle, 1986, on "Second Sight" at SFMOMA), Michael Brenson (New York Times, 1988), and James F. Cooper (New York City Tribune, 1985/86) - plus a black-and-white portrait photo of Nerdrum and his own blunt artist's statement ("Art today has no meaning. I am a kitsch maker"). Verso of rear cover carries the Weinstein Gallery imprint/contact block. .…

Co-owners Josh Niesse and Megan Bell met in 2011, just 10 days or so after Josh opened the doors of Underground Books, literally underground, several steps below street level in a 100-year-old basement in our historic downtown. Megan, an English student at the University of West Georgia, walked in, fell down the rabbit hole, and never left! Reader, we married in May of 2014, under the book arch that now resides at the bookshop. We are both proud alumni of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS), and Megan additionally of Rare Book School at the University of Virginia and of the ABAA Women’s Initiative Mentorship Program.
