Condition: Very Good: solid; with the bookplate of George Brumell vol. 1; name Charles Osborne Provis Gibson in all four, and a few penned notes by Gibson, especially in the introduction by R H Evans. A tiny crack just starting in the leather of vol 1 at spine bottom. Four volumes hardbound in contemporary full calf, with gilt spine titles and ornamentation; Vol. I - Engraved Frontis. + xxii. pp. + (1) blank + 384 pp.; Vol. II - vi.+ 364 pp.; Vol. III - vi.+ 364 pp.; iv.+ 367 pp. Evans focused on ballads not found in Percy's "Reliques of Ancient Poetry". The first version of Evan's Ballads was published in 1777 then expanded to include others found in old manuscripts and broadsides on 1784 and again expanded and re-published by Evan's son in 1810.
