A propos de cet article

Scarce Estienne edition of Pindar’s Odes — Olympian, Pythian, Nemean, Isthmian — with fragments of eight other major Greek lyric poets, including Alcaeus, Sappho, Anacreon, Bacchylides, Stesichorus, Simonides, Ibycus, and Alcman. This Editio Tertia of 1586 presents the Greek text with facing Latin translations and scholia, the fruit of Henri Estienne’s renowned classical press at Geneva. The Estienne olive tree device appears on the title. An important work of Renaissance scholarship, this edition was the principal vehicle through which Pindar and the lyric poets were read in Western Europe. Copies were used by humanists, poets, and philologists for generations. Bound in contemporary limp vellum, well worn but intact, with the textblock clean and complete. A desirable early edition of Pindar and the Greek lyric canon, from one of Europe’s most important presses. Estienne’s 1586 Editio Tertia of Pindar and the Greek lyric poets, in parallel Greek and Latin, in contemporary vellum. A landmark of Renaissance classical scholarship. Good. Vellum binding wrinkled and worn, lacking ties. Interior clean, margins ample, some light browning and minor annotations. Estienne device strong. Contemporary limp vellum, soiled and wrinkled, original sewing visible, lacking ties.…

Description de la boutique

About Us El Sabio Books Inc. was founded in Calgary by David and Sean O’Neil, a partnership built on a shared fascination with history, philosophy, and the written word. Our journey began when a visit to a local antiquarian bookshop led to the discovery of a remarkable collection: a bulk lot of sixteenth to eighteenth century volumes found in a modest house in Humboldt, Minnesota, a quiet rural town far from any major center of the book trade. When offered the chance to see them, we found a beautiful compilation of survivors of centuries past. The idea that such a trove of knowledge and craftsmanship had resurfaced in a small Midwestern town was astonishing. When Aquila Books offered the collection for sale as a single lot, we recognized the opportunity and decided to purchase it together. If that chance had not been offered, El Sabio Books would never have begun. That decision marked the start of a family enterprise devoted to preserving and sharing the intellectual and artistic legacy contained in these works. With the generous guidance and early support of Aquila Books, one of Canada’s leading antiquarian booksellers, and the technical assistance of Bibliopolis, El Sabio Books took shape around a clear mission: to safeguard the words that have shaped civilization. We believe the words written in these books are history itself, fixed, enduring, and immune to revision. They stand as the unaltered record of human thought. Our purpose is to act as custodians of that word, protecting and presenting it with the respect it deserves, because within it lies the foundation of knowledge and truth that connects all generations. Today, El Sabio Books is a growing family business dedicated to careful research, accurate cataloguing, and respect for the craftsmanship of past centuries. Our goal is to connect modern readers and collectors with the enduring wisdom of the past, to keep alive the voices, ideas, and artistry that have guided human understanding for hundreds of years.…
