Wraps. Etat : Very Good. First edition. First printing. Printed stiff wrappers, 39 pp. Inscribed in ink on the top portion of the front wrap: "Mrs W.B. Snell/ from her affectionate incle/ R.C. Winthrop". Some chipping to the head and foot of spine and to the fore edge of the rear wrap. Light tidemarking outer portion of the front wrap, more so to the title page. An oration delivered to Congress on the occasion of the completion of the Washington Monument. Boston-born John C. Winthrop (1809-1894) was a Harvard guaduate who studied law with Daniel Webster circa 1830. He was elected to Congress in 1835 and served as Speaker of The House 1838-40. To date Winthrop was the last Speaker to represent neither the Republican or Democratic party (he was a Whig). Construction of the Washington Monument, though begun in 1848, was not completed until late 1884 (in fact, some finishing internal touches were not comleted until 1888). N° de réf. du vendeur E18844
