If you want to convert a collection of images into a computer database, organize access to sound recordings through a Web browser or store a company’s archives in one searchable computerized structure, the database must be set up so that users can find what they want and make maximum use of the information it holds. À propos de l?auteur: Mary Burke, who holds postgraduate degrees in both information science and chemistry, is Professor and Head of the Department of Library and Information Studies, University College Dublin, Ireland. Previous posts have included Information Scientist at the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards in Dublin, Lecturer in Information Retrieval at University College Dublin and Visiting Associate Professor at Syracuse University, New York, USA. Mary Burke is a member of the editorial board of the journal Library and Information Science Research, has published a wide range of papers on electronic information retrieval. She has acted as consultant on information systems and services to national and international organizations including the European Commission, the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, the H. W. Wilson Company and Telecom Eireann. She is a member of a number of professional information science, library and computer bodies including the Institute of Information Scientists, the Irish and UK Library Associations and the Irish Computer Society.
