The original Dungeons & Dragons box set was based on the fantasy portion of the earlier Chainmail rules and also suggested the use of Outdoor Survival, a board game from Avalon Hill. There have been many incarnations and editions of Dungeons & Dragons over the years but this is the product that started it all.This is the 5th printing of the box set. It came in the white box with no starburst on the cover and contained: Volume I: Men and Magic, Volume 2: Monsters & Treasure, Volume 3: The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures, and Reference Sheets. One thing worthy of note concerning this printing is that the copyright is listed as 1974 (the original date of the 1st printing) but the printing was actually done in 1975.
