8vo, pp. 80; disbound. A detailed but rather eccentric and rambling pamphlet with - as the title page suggests - a number of different purposes. The 'Plan for an universal philosophical language' (pp. 12-39) is mostly an impressive list of English words whose translations in other languages are very similar, and it is not at all clear how this could be made into a universal language. On the other hand, he is clear that if some sort of universal language could be found, it would make for less misunderstanding and greater peace among nations. Rowland Jones (d. 1774) was an accomplished linguist and amateur philologist from Caernarvonshire whose main purpose was to uncover the original language of humankind before the fall of the tower of Babel. His conclusion was that this was Celtic, which led him to suggest that Welsh was the purest and most ancient of languages, as he proposed in The Origin of Language and Nations (1764). The present work is in some measure a defence against the many criticisms of his earlier book. Jones's biographer in ODNB comments that 'by combining both the notion of instituting a philosophically perfect language and the search for the lost tongue of Adam, Jones represents a unique synthesis of two of the key propositions in eighteenth-century linguistics'.…
