Second edition, expanded from the first, which had been printed the previous year. Derham, by profession a clergyman and rector of Upminster, Essex, was also a scientist and FRS, and known to Newton, Halley and Sloane. These are his Boyle lectures for 1711-12, intended by their founder, Robert Boyle, to promote a synthesis of science and theology ('natural theology'). Derham's lectures was one of the most successful series, being reprinted numerous times: in this second edition, Derham took the opportunity to correct errors, and to add several lengthy footnotes, which are detailed in a new preface to the reader. A plan of the argument on pp. 1-16 at the beginning of the volume shows the progression from observation of the natural world, to a belief in God's design, and thus an obligation to obedience and worship. There are two states of the imprint to this edition, one with the date misprinted as 1716. Provenance. Bookplate of Herbert Edward Douglas Blakiston (1862-1942), cleric and academic, President of Trinity College Oxford from 1907 to 1938. Blakiston was an unpopular figure in early 20th-century Oxford, obsessed with finance and extremely reluctant to allow women into full membership of the university. He was, however, exceptionally interested in Trinity men, and no doubt owned this because Derham had been at Trinity in the 1670s.
