Sammelband with two titles in one contemporary binding. Small octavo, 6.5 in. x 4.2 in., pp. liv, 149, [3] (advertising), 44. "The Poetical Works." is embellished with dozens of engravings on wood, by Austin. "The Grave" by Blair has its own title page and is illustrated with an engraved frontis and one additional plate. This publication is unlisted in WorldCat. ( Dark half calf over marbled boards. Gilt title and double bandlines to spine. Marbled edges. Rubbing to edges and light scuffing to boards. Half inch chip to spine. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown; old signature to top of title page. Spine and hinges tight. Spotting to title and contents pages, with light spotting throughout. The bookplate is that of Rosamond Wigram (1872 - 1958), the domestic partner of renowned British surgeon Louisa Aldrich-Blake. Oliver Goldsmith (1728 - 1774): "A Poet, Naturalist, and Historian, who left scarcely any style of writing untouched, and touched nothing that he did not adorn. Of all the passions, whether smiles were to move or tears, a powerful yet gentle master. In genius, vivid, versatile, sublime. In style, clear, elevated, elegant." (from an Epitaph written by Samuel Johnson) Rev. Robert Blair (1699 - 1746) was a Scottish poet who published only three poems. One was a commemoration of his father-in-law and another was a translation. His reputation rests entirely on his third work, The Grave (1743), which is a poem written in blank verse on the subject of death and the graveyard. It is much less conventional than its gloomy title might lead one to expect. Its religious subject no doubt contributed to its great popularity, especially in Scotland, where it gave rise to the so-called "graveyard school" of poetry.
