Item description from seller

xxxv, 651, [28 (index)] pp. Frontis plus numerous folding plates (maps). 8-5/8" x 5-1/2" "The Post-Chaise Companion of Ireland was first published by W. Wilson in 1786. Although a number of companions of this kind were published for Irish use before and after Wilson's edition, this represents one of the most complete guides of its type and all of which were to be relegated to history less than fifty years later with the advent of the railway. Prior to mechanisation, the post-chaise was the most familiar and widely used means of road transport. This commonly took the form of a closed-body travelling carriage, which together with a pair or four horses and postilion driver was hired from stage to stage." (eneclann.ie). Modern binding with very light wear. Paper age-toned and foxed, delicate, title leaf with two previous owners' signatures. Some creasing and wear to folding plates. Withal, a VG example. Modern light brown half leather binding over beige marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt stamped lettering and rules to spine. Blue speckled edges 4th edition, "corrected & enlarged, with an Entire New Set of Plates." Ca. 1813-1820.
