A propos de cet article

The volume contains: The Atlantic Charter One World, by Wendell L. Willkie — complete The Problems of Lasting Peace, by former President Herbert Hoover and Hugh Gibson — complete The Price of Free World Victory, by Vice President Henry A. Wallace, from The Century of the Common Man Blue-Print for Peace, by Sumner Welles, from The World of the Four Freedoms Of particular historical interest is the publisher's wartime production statement explaining that, pursuant to a 1943 War Production Board ruling curtailing publishers' use of paper, the participating publishers cooperated by using lighter-weight paper and printing with reduced margins and increased words per page in order to conserve paper, plate metal, and labor. Young Family Association / Provenance Association copy from the Young family library, with both a contemporary 1943 presentation inscription and original 1945 handwritten correspondence laid in. The front endpaper bears a handwritten presentation/ownership inscription to C. H. Young, husband of Dr. Young, dated September 7, 1943, the year of publication. The volume comes from the Young family collection, in which inscriptions, correspondence, annotations, and other ephemera preserved in multiple volumes document the family's ownership and personal associations. Also preserved with this volume is an original handwritten postal card addressed to Miss Louise King, Box 2151, West Palm Beach, Florida, postmarked: ANDERSON, S.C. APR 29 1945 The reverse contains a lengthy handwritten personal message filling essentially the entire card. Louise King appears elsewhere in material preserved with books from the Young family library and was a friend of the family, making the postal card particularly relevant as surviving family-associated ephemera rather than simply an unrelated piece used as a bookmark. The April 29, 1945 postmark is noteworthy in its historical context: the correspondence was mailed during the final days of World War II in Europe, only days before Germany's surrender in May 1945. No claim is made that the contents of the correspondence concern the surrender or the political subjects of the book; its significance lies in its contemporary wartime date and its association with the Young family collection. The juxtaposition is nevertheless particularly evocative: a 1943 book devoted to the problems of achieving a lasting postwar peace, retained by its wartime owner, with personal correspondence from the closing days of the European war surviving inside it. The original 1945 postal card is included with the book and will remain with the volume as part of its provenance. Binding appears sound. Interior generally clean and well preserved for an 80-plus-year-old wartime volume, with expected age toning and occasional minor spotting/foxing. Some discoloration/offsetting visible to endpapers/pastedowns. Original handwritten 1945 postal correspondence laid in. Please examine photographs for additional condition details. Historical Interest A particularly appealing copy for collectors interested in World War II, American political history, postwar planning, Herbert Hoover, Wendell Willkie, Henry Wallace, Sumner Welles, wartime publishing, South Carolina history, Florida history, manuscript ephemera, association copies, and family provenance. Unlike an ordinary copy of Prefaces to Peace, this example preserves contemporary evidence of its wartime ownership and subsequent family associations through the dated 1943 inscription and original April 1945 correspondence. A historical association/provenance copy in which the surviving ephemera adds an unusual personal dimension to one of the major American wartime anthologies devoted to the question of what would follow World War II.…

Description de la boutique

Welcome to The Hidden History of Books, where every volume has a story waiting to be rediscovered. As a retired librarian with a background in scholarly research and book provenance, I specialize in rare books and first editions that span all genres — from the overlooked and obscure to the culturally iconic. My inventory is carefully sourced from estate sales and private collections, with a focus on books that carry the quiet weight of time, ownership, and intellectual legacy. I believe a book’s value lies not just in its content or rarity, but in the lives it has touched along the way — authors, owners, annotators, and collectors. That belief informs everything I do. You can count on: Conservative grading — no surprises, no exaggerations. I highlight flaws openly and describe condition with care. Detailed listings with a focus on historical and bibliographic context when available. Fast, safe shipping using USPS Media Mail and secure packaging to protect your purchase. Whether you’re a collector, a scholar, or a fellow lover of forgotten shelves, I invite you to browse the catalog and uncover the hidden histories that live between the covers.…
