A propos de cet article

First edition of this charming illustrated children's book by the beloved Victorian author "Pansy" (Isabella Macdonald Alden), with additional contributions from Faye Huntington and Mrs. Morse, as noted in the author's preface. Poems in the book were written by Rev. G. R. Alden (Pansy's husband). Published by D. Lothrop & Co. of Boston. Bound in the publisher's striking green cloth with elaborate gilt and black decorative stamping on the front board and spine. The front cover features ornate gilt lettering spelling "Pansy's Picture Book," with a beautiful gilt pansy flower motif set in a diamond-shaped medallion, flanked by decorative circular ornamental designs. The spine is similarly decorated in gilt and dark blue with the title in gilt lettering. Floral and geometric designs stamped in dark blue adorn the spine panel. The rear board is plain green cloth. Contains numerous full-page black-and-white wood-engraved illustrations throughout, including a lovely frontispiece depicting a young girl gazing out a window in winter, and charming vignettes of children at play on the title page. Condition notes: Boards show moderate wear with scuffing and light scratches, most notably on the rear cover. Gilt on the front board remains bright and legible. Spine ends are worn with fraying at the head and tail; cloth at the spine extremities is rubbed through in places. Corners are lightly bumped. Text block is separated from the front cover — the front hinge is cracked/split, with the text block pulling away from the binding at the fore-edge (visible gap when book is closed). Pages are toned throughout, as expected for the age. Edges of leaves are somewhat rough/deckled. No foxing noted on interior pages examined. Two previous ownership inscriptions: one on the front free endpaper reading "Oct. 1876" and "Ms. Mattie Larrabee / From Mother," and a second name, "Eleanor J. Larrabee," inscribed on the following page and again at the top of the title page. A penciled price notation ("$50.00") appears in the upper corner of the front endpaper. A wonderful association copy with provenance — gifted by a mother to her daughter in October 1876, the year of publication, and later passed to another family member. A scarce and appealing Victorian children's book in collectible condition despite the hinge issue.…
