A propos de cet article

33 p. A good and very clean copy. - From the Introduction: The work of constructing representations on paper has recently been scrutinised in several excellent studies. These papers have carefully traced the way representations come into being by superposing different kinds of inscriptions or systems of signs, tables, numbers, formulas, graphs, diagrams, pictures, photographs, etc., and by manipulating them on paper. In this paper I analyse a specific kind of constructing representations, the building of models of invisible objects closely tied to experimentation. I argue that this particular type of work often applies inscriptions, with or without representational functions, in a way hitherto not sufficiently studied: as tools on paper, or "paper tools," which are, on some level, similar to laboratory tools. - Wikipedia: Ursula Klein (born 1952) is a German historian of science known for her cross-disciplinary work on the historical emergence of scientific and technological knowledge. She is a senior research scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, Germany. Her work has shown how experimentalists created specialised information technologies called "paper tools" to generate new knowledge systems. Her interpretation of such tools has been widely applied by historians, philosophers and sociologists of science and technology, and is seen as marking a foundational change in scientific reasoning and practice in the history of chemistry in the early 19th century.
