A propos de cet article

A richly illustrated 17th-century edition of Paradisus animae Christianae, the celebrated devotional work by Jacobus Merlo Horstius, pastor at St. Maryâs, Pfarrkirche, near Cologne. Known as one of the most influential Catholic spiritual books of the post-Tridentine era, the Paradisus offers meditations, prayers, and reflections for cultivating piety in daily life, often compared to Thomas à Kempisâ Imitatio Christi. This Gedani (GdaÅsk) printing of 1683 is notable for its fine copperplate engravings, including an allegorical frontispiece, a devotional title-page in red and black, and full-page plates depicting the Trinity, the Crucifixion, the Madonna and Child, and other religious scenes. These engravings made the Paradisus especially popular as a visual as well as a textual guide for meditation. Provenance: Early ownership inscription âEx Libris M. Davidâ on front pastedown, dated 18th century. Signs of devotional use, with expected wear to binding and light age-toning. Bound in contemporary full calf, rubbed and worn with losses to spine ends, but structurally solid. All edges gilt, interior remarkably clean with engravings well-preserved. A handsome survival of one of the most important Catholic devotional works of the 17th century, in an attractive illustrated edition. 1683 Gedani edition of Horstiusâ Paradisus animae Christianae, richly illustrated with engraved plates, in contemporary calf with gilt edges and early ownership inscription. Good â" contemporary calf rubbed with losses at head and tail of spine, but binding sound; textblock clean, engravings strong and well-preserved. Contemporary full calf, spine with raised bands. Leather rubbed and worn, loss at head and foot of spine, but binding sound. All edges gilt. 8vo Gedani [GdaÅsk], Aegidius Janssonius à Waesberge, 1683. Later revised edition.…

Description de la boutique

About Us El Sabio Books Inc. was founded in Calgary by David and Sean O’Neil, a partnership built on a shared fascination with history, philosophy, and the written word. Our journey began when a visit to a local antiquarian bookshop led to the discovery of a remarkable collection: a bulk lot of sixteenth to eighteenth century volumes found in a modest house in Humboldt, Minnesota, a quiet rural town far from any major center of the book trade. When offered the chance to see them, we found a beautiful compilation of survivors of centuries past. The idea that such a trove of knowledge and craftsmanship had resurfaced in a small Midwestern town was astonishing. When Aquila Books offered the collection for sale as a single lot, we recognized the opportunity and decided to purchase it together. If that chance had not been offered, El Sabio Books would never have begun. That decision marked the start of a family enterprise devoted to preserving and sharing the intellectual and artistic legacy contained in these works. With the generous guidance and early support of Aquila Books, one of Canada’s leading antiquarian booksellers, and the technical assistance of Bibliopolis, El Sabio Books took shape around a clear mission: to safeguard the words that have shaped civilization. We believe the words written in these books are history itself, fixed, enduring, and immune to revision. They stand as the unaltered record of human thought. Our purpose is to act as custodians of that word, protecting and presenting it with the respect it deserves, because within it lies the foundation of knowledge and truth that connects all generations. Today, El Sabio Books is a growing family business dedicated to careful research, accurate cataloguing, and respect for the craftsmanship of past centuries. Our goal is to connect modern readers and collectors with the enduring wisdom of the past, to keep alive the voices, ideas, and artistry that have guided human understanding for hundreds of years.…
