Odbert, this elaborately hand-colored 1878 folio atlas of Warren County pro. Folio. Original publisher's cloth, spine broken, repaired with cloth tape. Binding heavily worn, with areas of exposed boards at edges and corners. 111,[141]-159 pages with 33 maps and 43 lithograph views (most of the views are hand-colored; includes 4 folding and 7 double-page maps. With pictorial lithograph titlepage (with portrait of Henry R. Rouse). Complete. Front free endpaper excised. Title page a bit dust soiled and with a few tiny spots. Occasional edge nick to small edge tear to folding maps. Otherwise, the maps and views are quite clean. It stands out as one of the few hand-colored 19th-century American county atlas view books. The extensive lithographic views document the burgeoning oil and timber operations that dominated northwestern Pennsylvania during the era."Engraved, lithographed, and printed" in Pittsburgh by Otto Krebs (a German immigrant who became a prominent western Pennsylvania lithographer), this work is recognized among a small group of prized regional atlases noted for their extensive hand-coloring. Krebs transitioned regional cartography from traditional engraving to vibrant commercial lithography, financing his elaborate productions through a subscription model. Local residents and businessmen paid to have their properties immortalized, resulting in a detailed visual record of local architecture and industry.The volume comprises comprehensive, color-coded township maps, municipal plans, and detailed directories of property owners. Beyond the cartography, the atlas contains dozens of detailed lithographic views showcasing grand residences, commercial blocks, and bustling industrial sites, such as the sprawling mills of Horn & Andrews in Garland and E.W. Ross & Son. The ubiquitous presence of oil derricks and lumber yards in these scenes visually reinforces the economic engine of the era. To highlight the dramatic pace of this growth, the publishers included a lithographic reproduction of Andrew H. Ludlow's 1838 map of Warren County, offering a stark comparative view of the region's rapid development.The atlas pays explicit tribute to the region's complex relationship with the petroleum industry. The title page prominently features a portrait of Henry R. Rouse, a local lumberman and state legislator who perished in the first major tragedy of the American oil rush, an 1861 well blowout and fire just south of the county line. While succumbing to his injuries, Rouse dictated a will leaving his vast estate to Warren County for the benefit of the poor and the improvement of its roads. His inclusion serves as a poignant reminder of both the wealth and the peril that defined the region.The pagination skips page numbers 112-140. There is no evidence that these pages are missing or were removed and the atlas was apparently issued without those pages and the table of contents does not refer to any content on those pages. We ship packages worldwide, using Federal Express, DHL, UPS and the US Postal Service (USPS). Orders received during before 3 p.m. Pacific Time on days when the gallery is open are typically shipped the same day. All other orders are typically shipped the next business day. When you order an item, you will receive an auto-generated confirmation email, confirming that your order has been processed by our email server. We will follow up with written confirmation that your order is in stock and has been shipped. Feel free to email or phone us if you have other questions.
While we make our best efforts to insure timely delivery of your packages, even the best courier services do not have perfect track records. Holidays and inclement weather can result in unforeseen delays. If you are purchasing an item for a gift or you otherwise have a specific deadline, please specify this information on your order form and use a shipping method that allows a safe time cushion for receipt of your order.
We have several shipping methods, depending upon the item. Maps are typically shipped either flat (encapsulated in Mylar and bound between multiple sheets of packing boards) or in custom thick core packing tubes. If you have a preference, please feel free to include this information when processing your order.
Shipping Insurance will be added to all items over $200.00. Insurance is typically billed at $0.05 per $100.00 (e.g., insurance for a $1000.00 map would be $5.00).
